Why Dropbox Capture is becoming the best Droplr/Loom alternative

I’ve been using a lifetime Droplr license for years now, but I’m switching to a free app: Dropbox Capture. Here’s why.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has made some things clear, like how much easier work gets when you’re using the best tools for the job. Tools like Zoom and Microsoft Teams saw huge improvements, and a lot of other tools built for remote work were born(like Vimeo Record)

Dropbox saw the light and built a tool which doesn’t only makes a lot of sense for their business vision, but also works really great. Dropbox Capture is the free Droplr/CloudApp/Loom alternative you were looking for.

Must-have for creatives

While Dropbox isn’t the go-to cloud storage solution for regular users anymore (it’s just too convenient to get into the Office 365 or Google Drive ecosystem), they are still getting a lot of love from the creative space (myself included). They’re also expanding their ecosystem with great tools like Dropbox Paper, Dropbox Transfer and now Dropbox Capture.

In an industry where you’re working a lot with visual elements (like wireframes, mock-ups, prototypes, etc), being able to quickly demonstrate something with a screenshot or video makes your professional life a lot easier.

Until recently, I’ve been using Droplr for screenshots/files and Loom for recording video’s. That’s until I found out about Dropbox Capture.

Alpha with great potential

Dropbox Capture is currently in alpha, but the tool is already showing a lot of potential. By installing the beautifully designed app to your Mac or Windows computer, you’re able to take a screenshot, screen recording, screen recording + camera, make a gif, audio recording or even just record a video message through your webcam.

The end results are saved to a new Capture folder in your Dropbox account. After clicking the Dropbox Capture icon in your task bar, you’ll get a list of all the assets. By hovering over a capture, you can quickly get the url, copy the image or even draw on your image by choosing ‘Markup’.

The fact that I’m getting the best of Droplr and Loom combined in a single free (!) app is great for me. Of course the free storage you’re getting at Dropbox is rather limited, so if you’re capturing a lot of videos you’ll have to upgrade your storage or clean up your Dropbox on a regular base.

I just wish there was a way to quickly share a file by dragging and dropping a file to the Dropbox Capture icon in your task bar (just like you can with Droplr).

Try it yourself

If you have to share screenshots or videos on a daily base, be sure to give Dropbox Capture a shot! You can download it for free on macOS and Windows. Let me know in the comments what you think of the product and if it will become your new go-to capture tool.
